Early Learning Programs

Wakulla County Schools is committed to giving our youngest learners a strong start through high‑quality early childhood education.

We proudly offer two programs designed to support school readiness and meet the diverse needs of families and children.

Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)

Wakulla County Schools offers both half‑day and full‑day VPK options:

  • Half‑Day VPK: Fully covered by the child’s state-issued VPK certificate. No cost to families.

  • Full‑Day VPK: A tuition-supported option that extends learning and enrichment beyond the state-funded half-day program.

The Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Program is a state-funded initiative that supports early learning for four-year-olds (children who turn four on or before September 1 and reside in Florida). VPK helps prepare children for kindergarten by building foundational skills in literacy, math, social development, and readiness behaviors. Participation is completely voluntary for families and providers.

VPK is currently only offered at Medart Elementary School. Seating is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Once capacity is reached, applicants will be placed on a waitlist.

Prekindergarten Exceptional Student Education (ESE)

Our PK Exceptional Student Education (ESE) program provides specialized services for children ages 3–5 who qualify for support under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

These services may include:

  • Individualized instruction

  • Speech, occupational, or physical therapy

  • Support tailored to each child’s unique learning needs

PK ESE ensures that young learners receive the early intervention and support necessary to thrive in school and beyond. Prior to enrollment in our PK ESE program, each student will go through a screening and evaluation process to determine if they qualify for support under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
