Guidelines for Media Requests

Wakulla County Schools is committed to providing timely and accurate information to members of the media while ensuring the safety of students and staff and protecting student privacy.

The Office of Communications serves as the primary point of contact for all media requests involving Wakulla County Schools.

Contact for Media Requests

All media representatives must coordinate with the Wakulla County Schools Office of Communications before visiting any school campus or district facility. The Public Information Officer will assist with coordinating requests involving district leadership, school administrators, staff, or students.

Submitting a Media Request

To assist in processing requests efficiently, media representatives should include:

• The topic or information requested
• Individuals they wish to interview
• Any photography or video footage requested
• The expected timeline or deadline

The Office of Communications will coordinate requests with appropriate district or school personnel.

Campus Access for Media

All media representatives must coordinate with the Office of Communications before visiting any school campus or district facility.

Media representatives arriving on campus must:

  • Receive prior approval from the Office of Communications

  • Check in at the school’s front office upon arrival with required identification

  • Follow all visitor procedures and campus safety protocols

Media representatives who arrive on campus without prior coordination may be asked to leave and directed to contact the Office of Communications.

Due to school safety protocols and the need to protect secure areas of our campuses, filming inside school buildings may be limited to designated locations, restricted entirely, or permitted only with prior approval from school administration and the Office of Communications.

To ensure proper coordination, safety of students and staff and to avoid disruption to the instructional environment, media requests should be submitted at least 48 hours in advance.

Student Privacy and Interviews

Federal and state laws strictly govern what information schools may release about students.

Applicable laws include:

  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

  • Florida Statute §1002.221 – K-12 Education Records

  • Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA)

Student records are confidential and exempt from public disclosure under Florida law. Wakulla County Schools cannot release information about individual students to anyone other than the student’s parent or legal guardian.

To protect student privacy and ensure appropriate supervision, all media interviews with students must be coordinated through the Office of Communications and the school administration.

Media representatives may not independently approach or interview students on school property without prior district approval.

When student interviews are approved, appropriate parental permission and school supervision may be required.
