Homeless Education

• Identify all preschool (3 & 4 yrs. old) & school-aged students who are homeless or in transition.
• Assist with school enrollment & transportation to school.
• Remove barriers to their education.
• Provide supplemental academic assistance (tutors).
• Facilitate the student's ability to maintain a stable educational environment.
• Make referrals for health & other services as needed by each child and family.
• Educate district staff and the community about the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and services provided by the WCSB Homeless Education Program.

The term "homeless children and youth" means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes children and youths who are:

• sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason;
• living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative accommodations;
• living in emergency or transitional shelters; are abandoned in hospitals; or are awaiting foster care placement;
• living in a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for humans;
• living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.

Note: Migrant and Unaccompanied children & youth qualify if they live in any of the circumstances described above.
