Wakulla County Schools Celebrate “Read Across America Day”

March 4, 2020

All of the Wakulla County schools celebrated “Read Across America Day” on March 2, the date chosen by the Florida Department of Education because it is the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

“The purpose is to promote reading, celebrate a fantastic author, and involve the community by having members come and read to our students,” said Shadeville Elementary Principal Nick Weaver.

Riversprings Middle School AVID Coordinator Kelly Dykes also took her AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) students to SES to read to the elementary students.

Community members, many of them former Wakulla County students, also came to read, such as NFL football star and Shadeville alumnus Sam McGrew, Wakulla County Sheriff Jared Miller, and Major Ray Johnson.

Speech and Language professional Amanda Coker organized the Shadeville event.

"This was a great day to not only celebrate an amazing author but to also show the students the abundant support in our community for them," added Weaver.
