An Important Message from Superintendent Pearce
Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members,
As we move towards the fall re-opening of schools I would like to share with you where we currently are. First, I am proud of our community’s effort to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus. We have done a fantastic job! As we open school back up, continuing our efforts at home will be extremely important. It will allow us to be closer to normal during the student school day in August. If our students arrive at school virus free each day, we can approach what we know as a normal school day operation sooner. Our goal is to return to what was normal before the school shut down in the spring as soon as we possibly can. However, we will need to work together to take precautions to ensure student, employee, and community safety at the start.
As a parent, you will make the decisions on how your child is educated. Currently you have multiple choices available to you that existed well before the arrival of the Covid-19 virus. These choices could include; traditional school in brick and mortar classrooms with a teacher physically present; full time virtual school at home in a distance-learning platform; home school conducted by the parent; or enrollment in private school. Again, you will make this choice for your child. Our staff can help you understand your options better and are ready to help you if needed.
Governor Desantis and Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran have released guidelines for the safe re-opening of Florida’s public schools. They have recommended that school districts re-open our school centers this fall for our students to physically be in a classroom with a teacher present. This is our goal. Thursday, August 13th will be the first day of school and it will be a half day for students. Currently safety guidelines recommend that students wear a mask, but it does not require that they do. We will provide a mask for those students that do not have one but want one. Additionally other safety precautions will be in place to screen students as they board a bus and arrive at school each day. This will include touch free temperature checks and symptom screening. Staff will be performing disinfectant applications before, during and after school to keep our buildings sanitized. Safety protocols are of the utmost importance. Specific details on safety procedures will be released in the coming weeks.
This year we will have open house. It will be modified to limit the number of students and parents on site on any given night. We anticipate it will take several nights to move through open house. More information will be forthcoming in the following weeks to provide specific schedules. Unfortunately, all these plans are subject to change as we plan to seek guidance from the Governor, Commissioner of Education, CDC and our local health department.
Should you need advice or help in making educational decisions for your child please feel free to contact your child’s school center or the Wakulla School Board Office at (850) 926-0065. Working together, we can ensure success for all of our students during this challenging time.
