Grade 8: Career Education
I. Classroom Management Introduction II. Major concepts/content. The purpose of this course is to provide a student with an understanding of the world of work and the knowledge needed to make some tentative decisions about his or her career plan for their future. The content will include, but not be limited to the following: careers and career opportunities in the occupational cluster areas of agribusiness and natural resources, homemaking, construction, environment, fine arts and humanities, health, hospitality and recreation, manufacturing, marine science, marketing and distribution, technology, public and personal service, and transportation III. Course Requirements. After successfully completing this course, the student will: Identify occupations and occupational titles within the occupational cluster areas. Describe activities performed in selected occupations. Discuss the educational requirements and preparation needed for employment in selected occupations, including salary scales. Express concepts relating to how jobs are created. Describe the importance and need for selecting careers as an individual in a free society. Explain techniques for career planning. Discuss the need for career planning, changing careers, and the concept of lifelong learning. IV, Workplace Skills Demonstrate personal qualities (e.g. dependability, punctuality, responsibility, integrity, getting along with others) that are needed to be successful in the workplace. Demonstrate skills to interact positively with others. Demonstrate employability skills such as working on a team, problem-solving and organizational skills. V. Career and Education Planning Identify secondary and postsecondary school courses and major areas of interest that meet tentative career plans. Identify advantages and disadvantages of entering various secondary and postsecondary programs for the attainment of career goals. Demonstrate knowledge of varied types and sources of financial aid to obtain assistance for postsecondary education. Identify inappropriate discriminatory behaviors that may limit opportunities in the workplace. Develop a career and education plan that includes short and long-term goals, high school program of study, and postsecondary/work goals. Describe how extracurricular programs can be incorporated in career and education planning. Demonstrate knowledge of high school exit options (e.g., standard diploma, certificate of completion, special diploma. GED, etc.) and impact on post-school opportunities. Describe high school credits and explain how GPAs are calculated. VI. Job Search Demonstrate skills to complete a job application.
