Criminal Justice
The Academy of Criminal Justice at Wakulla High School consists of the following courses:
Criminal Justice Operations I 8918010
Criminal Justice Operations II 8918020
Criminal Justice Operations III 8918030
The Criminal Justice I course introduces students to the fields of law enforcement, the court system and the correctional system. The content includes career opportunities in these fields, court system, correctional system, interpersonal and communication skills and employability skills.
In Criminal Justice II & III students develop competencies in patrol, traffic control, defensive tactics and physical proficiency skill plus first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. Additionally the curriculum expands on crime and accident investigation procedures, forensic science tasks, crime prevention and property control procedures. During the second semester of these two courses, students are given the opportunity to participate in a career shadowing rotation within the criminal justice system of Wakulla County. This rotation is administered by the high school instructor.
Classroom, lab activities and field trips are a vital part of this academy as instruction in the use of safety procedures, tools, equipment, materials and processes found within this career are a must. In an effort to make topics “real” for students, current equipment, materials and supplies are provided to enhance hands-on activities. Students will be able to experience activities that include basic procedures in traffic control; patrol; search and arrest; stop and frisk; mock trials; jail operations; crime prevention; fingerprinting; forensic photography; and crime laboratory examination procedures.
The Academy of Criminal Justice at Wakulla High School continues to reinforce the basic skills of English, mathematics and science appropriate to the tasks relevant to occupations within the criminal justice system. This also includes focusing on elements of the public service industry; planning; management; finance; technical and production skills; principles of technology; labor issues; community issues; and health, safety and environmental issues.
Students Must Meet the Following Criteria:
Open to grades 10, 11 and 12
Have a GPA of 2.0 or better
Have at least 5 credits
Good discipline record and attendance
Take the TABE test
