In an effort to enhance the Social Studies curriculum this year, Medart Elementary School students were involved in a special type of Student Council Office election on Sept. 21.
Instead of voting, o n school made paper ballots, the Mustangs experienced real-life voting on Wakulla County touch screen voting machines.
The event was organized by Guidance Counselor Laurie Beaton who is also the Student Council sponsor. She worked closely with Supervisor of Elections Sherida Crum to provide the voting opportunity for third, fourth and fifth graders.
“I wanted to provide an experience for the students that would hopefully encourage and excite them about becoming adult voters,” she said. The school used 12 Touch Screen machines and 20 fifth grade poll workers were trained to demonstrate how they work to the young voters.
Jan Colvin and Paul Davenport of the supervisor of elections office served as on-site supervisors and trainers.
The students received “I Voted” stickers and provided positive comments about the experience after voting.
At the end of the day, Medart Elementary congratulated its new 2007-08 Student Council Officers: President Josie Brooks; Vice President Adam Dodson; Assistant Vice President Nicolette Anico; Treasurer Taylor Vernon Secretary Kyleigh Sanders; and Sergeant-At-Arms Haley Carlton.
