WHS Junior Carlos Kilpatrick Recognized by Florida Board of Education

January 19, 2018

Wakulla High School 11th grader Carlos Kilpatrick was recognized as an outstanding student by the Florida Board of Education on January 17, 2018.  The Board oversees the Florida Department of Education.

Recommended by WHS Assistant Principal of Instructional Services Sherry Lohmeyer, Kilpatrick was commended for his academic success and his extracurricular involvement. In addition, he works at a local restaurant 30 hours per week.

“He has just always been an extremely hard worker,” says mother Robbin Kilpatrick. “If he’s not studying or working, he’s volunteering around the community.”

Carlos takes advantage of the most rigorous curriculum offered at WHS, including Honors, Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses.  He has a 3.7 weighted grade point average and has applied to take his entire senior year as an Early Admit student at Florida State University.

“He is currently awaiting a decision from FSU. Carlos plans to major in Criminal Justice and minor in Political Science, and aspires to become a public servant,” notes Lohmeyer.

In addition, Carlos is an inaugural member of the WHS Teen Democratic Party and he currently serves as president of the organization.

He is also an active member of Wakulla High School’s diversity program, where he volunteers countless hours in preparation for the Black History Month Celebration held annually in February. WHS Diversity Coordinator and Associate Dean “Mrs. Sonia Clark-Rosier has been a big influence in his life,” says Carlos’ mother.

WHS Principal Mike Barwick adds, “Carlos is the kind of person who accepts challenges as an opportunity to ‘rise to the occasion’ and become stronger.  He wants to make a positive difference in this world and he certainly is on the path to do so.”
